History Morgan's Island
East Island, also called Morgan’s Island, was purchased by financier J.P. Morgan JR. in 1903, where he lived until his death in 1943. He was the only resident, with the exception of his staff of servants, guards and 24 full‐time gardeners. The entire area became one huge garden, planted with exotic trees.
Joined by other developers of the Gold Coast such as Woolworth, Pratt, Frick, Kahn, Vanderbilt, Guggenheim, et al, Morgan created a legacy which was the basis for the description: The Gold Coast of Long Island.
The island’s residents drive from the mainland over a stone bridge barely wide enough for one car and pass through Dosoris Island. Residents say they feel like they are “on vacation” every time they drive over that bridge.
With barely more than 100 families, the island is a mile long and three-quarters of a mile wide, and is only a 45-minute drive to New York City.
